So as requested, I'm working on an Art Nouveau spam. It'll probably be up on Friday because a) I have to edit the pictures so they're all the same size and not RIDICULOUSLY HUGE and the ones in series are all put together. Plus, it's taking an annoyingly long time to find artists. You would think they'd all be listed on Wikipedia, but no. I have some serious complaints about the Wikipedia article. Half the artists they link to are so obscure there's only a sentence written about them, and a good deal of them aren't Art Nouveau at all but Art Deco. A bunch are just... I don't even know what, but there is nothing Art Nouveau-y about them. Like Klimt. Why is Klimt listed as being Art Nouveau when he clearly is not? SHAPE UP WIKIPEDIA.

/PRETENTIOUS

Anyway, while I was taking a break and nosing around tumblr, like I do, I came across this picture of Joseph Gordon-Levitt:

NONE OF YOU THOUGHT TO ALERT ME TO THE EXISTENCE OF THIS PICTURE? NO ONE AT ALL? YOU ARE ALL FIRED. FIRED.

...aaaaaand that's really all. This entry is pretty much an excuse to drool over the above picture and also a shameless request for people to play with me. Comment party? Anyone want to talk about how great Raising Hope was last night? Slash how hard they want to ship Jimmy/Sabrina with me? Or how awesome that chick from Garfunkel and Oates is in it? Want me to convince you to watch Hawaii 5-0 so I have someone to keyboard mash to in realtime? Anybody at all? Beuller?

I am SO GLAD someone else is watching Hawaii Five-0. :D Especially because Steve and Danny are a couple of old marrieds.

Dude, same. Writer's block is the worst. But I may need hand-holding while writing, if only because I am a stickler for proper characterization and getting voices right. D:

Well let me know! I spent about an hour and a half last night parsing out Steve's backstory only to not use it at all.

They really haven't done a lot with addressing Steve's storyline as far as that toolbox and his dad's investigation goes, lately. I'm hoping that will change. And he needs to be fixing up that old car! If the show won't write it in, I will. ;D You're welcome to bounce things off me, too. It'll be a Five-0 quid pro quo.

I have not started watching Hawaii 5-0 yet. Mostly because I refuse to watch shows in real-time because I have other things to do! So, when I can download a bunch of eps at-a-time I will mainline it. :D

I'm writing my holiday fest fic for Merlin fandom and generally being happy I have a few days to be stupid and fannish before work (most probably) kicks our butts.

The best part of the super-long weekend is the sitting around with an excuse to do NOTHING.

But omg srsly, it is so worth watching this show real-time. IT IS SO GOOD.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW. He put out a new little video last night and I was only capable of making squeaking noises for about five minutes straight. HE'S JUST SO DISCONCERTINGLY GOOD-LOOKING.

omg I LOVE RAISING HOPE. Also, Jimmy/Sabrina! THEY ARE SO FLIPPING-FLAPPING CUTE. And Burt is like, my hero. ALSO HOPE IS THE CUTEST BABY EVER.

So...I can only hope this isn't too creepy, BUT! I've been wandering around Ye Olde Internets looking for people who watch Hawaii 5-0, since I just started myself and, er. Fell in love! And I got here, and between that and the picture of JGL I feel a sort of DESPERATE NEED TO FRIEND YOU. Thoughts? :D

DONE AND DONE MY FRIEND. I recognized you vaguely from skirting around the Inception fandom, and upon closer look you are the person who wrote the ASDLKJFASDLKJFSJ West Wing!AU (I wrote a West Wing!AU for Merlin, though there was less badassery and more general boys who are failboats in love), and you are apparently a fan of Bones and Pushing Daisies. THIS ALL COUNTS IN YOUR FAVOR.

Hooray! Having a passing familiarity with Merlin and a, er, more than passing familiarity with The West Wing I am probably going to need to read that! :D :D :D

boys who are failboats in love

(Shhh Klimt is indeed considered part of art nouveau like much of the Vienna Secession. Some of his work is more typical nouveau than others but he still counts~~~~~~~~~~)

From: [identity profile] chibirhm.livejournal.com
The whole point is the look though! The whole point was that it was a general aesthetic that permeated everything from architecture to advertisements, and made fine art commercial and easily accessible to the masses! And Klimt is so fine art and the aesthetic doesn't match at all, he was just a contemporary! I mean, clearly he was influenced by their motifs somewhat but AUGH IT MAKES ZERO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

EDIT: Also, tell Andre I approve of that picture of him. His collar is pretty badass.

There's more to art nouveau's look than the Mucha woodblock hair flowing French curve thing, though. Jungendstil is considered art nouveau and it's got a very different flavor (well, it's just very German) than French art nouveau that we all think of. And then there's the Glasgow School which is like a bridge between Arts and Crafts and Nouveau in the most RANDOM LOCATION.

Klimt didn't only paint, is the rub. He did a lot of typography and poster art for the Vienna Secession and its publications. Some of it is extraordinarily weird (modern for the time sure and even weird now because he leaves these big ass white spaces and doesn't fill them in and it's just VISUALLY WEIRD). It's just that we remember him for his fine art.

Andre... HAS DISAPPEARED. I will let him know. He'll probably brag about it later.

He probably caught a look at that picture and went I AM SUCH A PIMP and is now somewhere congratulating himself.

There are certain aspects of Klimt that are Art Nouveau-y, like his commercial woodcuts, but in general he's far more abstract than Art Nouveau. I see Art Nouveau as a lead up to Art Deco and the golden age of illustration, and Klimt is just.... way in the other corner doing his own thing.

AND NOW HE'S BACK AND STARING ME IN THE FACE.

Of course, as I type that he goes away again.

I do get you about Klimt. He wasn't Cheret or Toulouse-Lautrec by any means. There's a reason he's not remembered for his design work like some other people he was working with. ahaha and there's a reason people remember the French (and Mucha but hey he worked in France) designers and don't think of the Austrian and German ones who were doing similar things. THEY DIDN'T DO THEM VERY LONG.
